Finding out you may be pregnant can leave you with a lot to process. Telling your partner may feel like one more big step, especially when you are still adjusting to the news yourself.
You do not need a perfect speech or answers to every question before you talk. A little preparation can make the conversation feel more manageable. True Care Women’s Resource Center is also here when you need a place to begin. We offer no-cost, confidential pregnancy testing and an opportunity to review your result with a nurse.

Begin With a Clear Result
If you have only taken a home pregnancy test, confirming the result can give you a clearer starting point. At True Care, a nurse will administer a urine pregnancy test and review the result with you.
Following a positive result at True Care, you will be offered a no-cost limited OB ultrasound appointment. An ultrasound may provide information about how far along you are, whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus, and whether a heartbeat can be detected.
You may feel more prepared to speak with your partner once you know more about your current pregnancy.
Keep the First Conversation Simple
Your first talk does not have to solve everything. Sometimes, it is enough just to share the news and give each other time to take it in.
You could begin with something like:
- “I took a pregnancy test, and it was positive. I wanted to tell you so we could talk about it.”
- “I am still processing this, but I want to share what I know so far.”
- “I do not have every answer yet. Can we take this one conversation at a time?”
Your partner may have questions or need a little time to take in the news. You can listen to his thoughts while also being honest about what you need.
Choose a Comfortable Time and Place
Think about where you both usually feel comfortable talking. A private, familiar place without distractions can make it easier to speak openly. Picking a time when you are not in a hurry can also help keep things calm.
You might also decide beforehand what would help you feel supported. Perhaps you want him to listen first, come with you to a future appointment, or help you think through practical concerns.
If you are worried that your partner may threaten, control, or hurt you, speak with someone you trust before having the conversation. The National Domestic Violence Hotline offers confidential help 24 hours a day.

Let True Care Be Your Starting Point
You do not have to handle every question on your own. At True Care, you can confirm your pregnancy, talk about the result with a nurse, and meet with an advocate who will listen to your concerns and explain your options.
If you are worried about practical needs, your advocate can help find resources that fit your needs.
