At-home abortions and ordering abortion pills online are becoming increasingly popular around the world. Marketing to American women is on the rise, even though selling and buying abortion pills online is illegal in the United States.

There are many possible risks to a woman’s health if she attempts an at-home abortion, something companies which sell such drugs do not disclose. There is even an FDA black box warning regarding the dangers of ordering the “abortion pill” online.

Potential Risks

The abortion pill is typically used when a woman is 10 weeks or less along in her pregnancy. Although many women believe they know how far along they are, the only for sure way to know is through ultrasound. If you take the abortion pill thinking you’re only five or six weeks along and you’re actually 12 or 13 weeks, the abortion pill may not work. The further you are in your pregnancy the higher the risks for dangerous complications when you take abortion medications.  Medical complications, such as an incomplete abortion (retaining parts of the pregnancy can lead to infection) or an uterine rupture (causing severe bleeding, scarring in the uterus, and even death), can result from taking the abortion drugs after 10 weeks gestation. A woman could have an ectopic pregnancy but not realize it; an ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening. An ultrasound ensures you have all the information you need to make an informed decision regarding the outcome of your pregnancy, including if you’re experiencing an ectopic pregnancy or a natural miscarriage. Anywhere from 10 to 30 percent of pregnancies end in natural miscarriage.

There are other risks to buying abortion pills online without a prior evaluation by a physician. Some women experience health issues that can affect how they respond to the abortion drugs Mifepristone and Misoprostol. If you have certain allergies or bleeding disorders, for example, you can experience added complications when taking these drugs. Cramping and heavy bleeding are common effects of the medication, and if you already have bleeding issues, taking them can lead to dangerous levels of blood loss.

There are many potential physical and emotional side effects to abortion. Therefore, the Mayo Clinic strongly states, “You must be certain about your decision before beginning a medical abortion.”

Our professionally trained nurses provide the answers to all those questions, free of charge. We also provide accurate and relevant brochures on abortion as well as adoption and parenting, all of which educate you on your three pregnancy choices.

If you’re experiencing an unplanned pregnancy, before ordering abortion pills online or traveling out-of-state for a medical or surgical abortion, make your free appointment at True Care. Our nurses will conduct a pregnancy test, and if that’s positive and they determine you’re far enough along for an ultrasound, they will provide one free of charge. They will also test your urine (the same sample you give for the pregnancy test) for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, the two most prevalent STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) in Natrona County and if you have one of those infections, our nurses can treat you with antibiotics. If you have an untreated STD and decide to have an abortion OR decide to carry to term, that infection can create complications regarding your future fertility.
