The answer is a definite “Yes!”
Two sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, are common culprits of PID and can be easily treated with antibiotics. True Care offers free testing for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea during your pregnancy test appointment, and our nurses provide treatment for our patients who test positive for either of these STDs. Many women infected with Chlamydia have no symptoms and, therefore, don’t know they have the disease. Studies show that patients who have Chlamydia at the time of an abortion have an increased risk of developing PID. In fact, one research study stated, “…the presence of Chlamydia in the cervical canal at the time of abortion in asymptomatic women increases the risk of postabortal PID.”
Increased Risk of STDs
The more sexual partners you have or the person you are intimate with has, the more at risk you are for STDs. The late former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, M.D., has been quoted as saying, “When you have sex with someone, you are having sex with everyone they have had sex with for the last ten years, and everyone they and their partners have had sex with for the last ten years.” A publication entitled “Your Sexual Exposure” shows if you have three partners, your exposure is seven, and with four partners, that number climbs to 15 (see more information on these statistics here: https://www.wvdhhr.org/appi/edresources/sexual_exposure_chart.pdf)
The only 100 percent best way to prevent STDs or pregnancy is abstinence. Second best for STD protection is for both people in the relationship to be 100 percent monogamous with each other.
Don’t play games with your health! If you believe you are pregnant and you are considering abortion, be sure to be tested for STDs BEFORE the procedure. Make sure you don’t have an infection and that you’re not risking your future sexual and reproductive health.
