In areas like Wyoming where access to abortion is not readily available, some women may search online for “natural” or Do-It-Yourself methods. Researching such topics will provide a plethora of information; however, a woman must ask herself if her future health and fertility, even her life, are worth the risk. Even attempting a DIY abortion is likely to cause serious, potentially irreversible harm.
An article on the website Science Based Medicine speaks to the importance of NOT relying on “Dr. Google,” as the writers call the Internet. “Having access to accurate medical advice based in science is important,” the authors write. Just because a person finds something online regarding the use of herbs and supplements to abort doesn’t mean such information is factual or founded in science. Taking too much of an herb or supplement can negatively impact your health. According to WebMD, for example, the Pennyroyal plant “has not been proven effective for any suggested uses. It was traditionally used to cause abortion, but the large doses required for this could kill the mother or cause irreversible damage to the liver and kidneys …. According to the National Institutes of Health, pennyroyal oil is considered unsafe for anyone at any dose ….”
Ordering the abortion pill online recently began in the United States; however, doing so is illegal. Those drugs require a doctor’s supervision. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) oversees management of abortion and other drugs for public safety, for YOUR safety. Such medication sold online comes from other countries like India; therefore, quality control is unknown. You have no guarantee what you will receive. Without safeguards like a physician administering the medication, the drugs may not work, and they could kill you.
The abortion pill is used for pregnancies up to 10 weeks. Without an ultrasound, a woman doesn’t know for sure how far along she is. We’ve recently had patients who thought they were only about six weeks but were 12, even 15 and 16 weeks along. That could be you. If you take the abortion pill and you’re farther into your pregnancy then 10 weeks, you could be risking your life – and you will likely need surgery.
The same is true for herbal-assisted abortions. A woman should be six weeks or less into her pregnancy, according to some herbalists. What if you’re farther along and don’t realize it?
