How a Pregnancy Can Go Unnoticed

While most pregnancies are detected early, there are rare cases when someone may not realize they’re pregnant until later on. This is sometimes called a cryptic pregnancy, which happens when symptoms are subtle, mistaken for other conditions, or menstrual cycles are already irregular.

Understanding your body and learning early pregnancy signs can help you decide when to take a test or speak with a medical professional.

Signs You Might Notice

Every woman’s body responds differently to pregnancy. Some may have multiple symptoms early on, while others notice only small changes, or none at all. Symptoms can also indicate other health conditions, making it difficult to know without testing.

Possible pregnancy symptoms include:

  • Missed period
  • Tender, swollen breasts
  • Frequent urination
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea (with or without vomiting)
  • Bloating
  • Cramping
  • Nasal congestion
  • Constipation
  • Food aversions
  • Moodiness

If you’ve been sexually active and notice any of these symptoms—or even if you haven’t noticed symptoms—taking a pregnancy test is the best way to find out.

When There Are No Clear Symptoms

Not having symptoms doesn’t automatically mean you aren’t pregnant. Women with irregular cycles might not realize they’ve missed a period, and early pregnancy signs can be easy to overlook. For the most accurate results, take a pregnancy test a few days after your missed period or about three weeks after possible conception.

It’s possible to get a false-negative if you test too soon, and occasionally a false-positive can occur due to certain health conditions, medications, or an early miscarriage. If you’re unsure about your result, retesting or speaking with a medical provider can give you peace of mind.
