Abortion Safety Checklist
Before scheduling your abortion appointment, make sure you’ve taken the necessary steps to ensure your health and safety:
1. Have an Ultrasound Procedure
An ultrasound will provide you with important information about your body and your health so that you can remain safe and healthy. The procedure will be able to medically confirm your pregnancy, as well as show you how far along you are. This is important to know as it will determine what abortion procedures are available to you.
2. Get Tested for STI/STDs
Having an abortion procedure with an untreated STI/STD increases the risk of complications, including the likelihood of contracting pelvic inflammatory disease (PID.) At True Care, we can offer you no-cost limited STI testing and treatment.
3. Understand the Risks
There are both physical and emotional risks to an abortion. If you aren’t sure of these risks, a member of our staff would be happy to talk through those with you. It’s valuable to note that you are at a greater risk for emotional side effects if you’re feeling pressured, are having an abortion to please someone else, or if you believe abortion is wrong.
4. Check Your Potential Abortion Provider’s Credentials
Ensure that your potential abortion provider is properly licensed with the necessary privileges to admit you to the hospital, should an emergency occur. You can check these privileges by calling your local hospital.
5. Consider Each of Your Options
An important part of the decision-making process is learning about each option and knowing how each one would work for you. Only then can you truly make the most informed, empowering decision for your body and your future.
6. Know that it’s Okay to Change Your Mind
From the moment you discover you’re pregnant to when you’re sitting in the waiting room for your abortion, it is okay to change your mind. This is a very big decision, and we simply want to make sure you’re making the best choice for you.
