Medical Abortion Reversal.

Did you know that medical abortion can now be reversed within a few days after beginning the process?  The sooner the reversal procedure is begun after taking the “abortion pill” the better the results.  Kind of shocking isn’t it?

The whole idea of abortion reversal seems foreign.  A woman who chooses abortion is supposed to be strong and smart without regrets.  Yet some women who make the choice and swallow that first pill feel intense regret and guilt afterward.  Until recently they didn’t have an option; it was too late to change their mind.  Now there is an option for women who believe they made a huge mistake when they took that first pill.

It is important to understand that abortion reversal can only be used with a medical abortion and not with a surgical abortion. Abortion reversal is still a new procedure and only a few patients have gone through the process.

What is a medical abortion?

A medical abortion ends a pregnancy by using a combination of medications taken within the first nine weeks of pregnancy.  The earlier in the pregnancy the better chance of a complete abortion.  The first medication, mifipristone (also known as RU486) is usually taken in the doctor’s office and causes the body to block a hormone called progesterone which is needed to sustain the pregnancy.  Progesterone prevents the lining of the uterus from breaking down when a woman gets pregnant.  Without progesterone the woman’s uterus will begin to shed the lining (just like when she begins her period).  The second medication is misoprostol which causes the uterus to contract and expel the embryo and uterine lining.   The woman will experience heavy cramping and bleeding during the medical abortion process. Eight to ten percent of medical abortions are unsuccessful and require a surgical abortion to complete the process.

What is Abortion Pill Reversal?

The abortion pill reversal process involves treating a woman with progesterone as soon as possible to stop the effects of the abortion pill. Progesterone is a natural hormone produced by the body to sustain a pregnancy.  It does not hurt the growing baby or cause birth defects.  The progesterone the woman receives counteracts the progesterone-blocking abortion pill and prevents the sloughing of the uterine lining.

To be eligib\le for abortion reversal a woman must have started a medical abortion by taking the first pill and not yet taken the second abortion pill.  She needs to see a physician willing to work with abortion reversal patients as soon as possible.  The sooner she begins the progesterone therapy the better chance of a positive outcome.  She can visit http://www.abortionpillreversal.com or call 877-558-0333 to talk with a nurse and get referrals to a doctor near her who accepts abortion reversal patients.

There have been some positive results for women who have had an abortion pill reversal and went on to deliver healthy babies.  Dr. Delgado, who pioneered the reversal procedure, says that “the children born when the mother only ingested the first drug of the medical abortion, mifepristone, will be healthy. Research shows that it is when the mother ingests both drugs of the medical abortion, the child is at risk of having defects.” There has also been heart break when a woman seeks help too late and the abortion cannot be reversed.
