For example, medical abortions are FDA-approved for use only up to 10 weeks of pregnancy. Beyond this point, other procedures would be necessary. An ultrasound ensures you have the right information about your pregnancy’s timeline.
2. Check Your Pregnancy Location
A positive pregnancy test confirms the pregnancy hormone hCG is present but doesn’t guarantee that you are pregnant or that the pregnancy is developing properly in the uterus. Sometimes, the embryo implants outside the uterus, which is known as an ectopic pregnancy.

Not all pregnancies progress as expected. Approximately one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage. If a miscarriage has occurred or is likely, abortion would not be the appropriate step.
