True Care Now Offers Abortion Pill Reversal
July 11th 2017
True Care Women’s Resource Center is excited to announce that we now offer Abortion Pill Reversal. This is a new treatment for women who have started a chemical (or medication) abortion and regret that decision. Many people don’t realize that the Abortion Pill can sometimes be reversed. The reversal process is called Pregnancy Sustaining Progesterone Therapy (PSPT) or Abortion Pill Reversal, and in about 50 percent of cases, a woman goes on to deliver a healthy baby. How is this possible?
Medical Abortion (abortion pill)
A medical abortion is done early in pregnancy (up to 10 weeks). The woman needs to take two separate medications a few days apart to complete the abortion. The first medication is a drug called mifepristone (also known as RU486 or the abortion pill) which blocks the body from using progesterone. Progesterone is a natural female hormone that helps to sustain pregnancy. Women who are prone to miscarriage often take progesterone early in pregnancy to increase their chances of carrying the pregnancy. When the body can’t use progesterone, the lining of the uterus loses blood flow and sloughs off, ending the life of the unborn. The second medication, misoprostol, causes uterine contractions to help expel the contents of the uterus.
What is Abortion Pill Reversal?
Dr. George Delgado is the director of Abortion Pill Reversal; he developed the steps to reverse a chemical abortion. Although abortion pill reversal is a fairly new and a somewhat controversial medical regimen, Dr. Delgado testified earlier this year before the Colorado Legislature, “Our overall success rate is 50-55%.”
The PSPT treatment uses the hormone progesterone, which has been prescribed for the past 40 years to pregnant women who have a history of miscarriage; it has no risk of birth defects. The PSPT regimen is intense and time consuming and has no guarantees of success. However, more than 250 babies have been delivered successfully after abortion reversal treatment.
A woman has a short window of time to begin the progesterone therapy, usually within 72 hours of taking the first of the two pills she is given as part of a chemical abortion. Beginning the PSPT regimen within 24 hours has the greatest chance of success. The woman receives an ultrasound to be sure there is a fetal heartbeat before starting the process. She may receive the progesterone in daily injections or pills/suppositories. This is a long term commitment, and some pregnancies still fail; but there have been many success stories with healthy deliveries.

Abortion reversal does not pertain to surgical abortion procedures but only to the “abortion pill.”
